An investigation has begun into the cause of an explosion which happened at a derelict former petrol station in Long Eaton yesterday.
The explosion, which happened at 12.29pm on Tamworth Road is believed to have been caused by residual petrol fumes, inside tanks stored below ground, being ignited by sparks from equipment used in the demolition.
One demolition worker, working on the site at the time of the explosion, was treated for his injuries by East Midlands Ambulance Service and taken to hospital.
Firefighters have now pumped water into the disused tanks to ensure the safety of the site.
The investigation is being conducted by the Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service in conjunction with the Health and Safety Executive.
