Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Thursday, July 5, how Daniel Lee Hatton, 34, of Old Road, Tintwistle, was upset because he thought his partner was having an affair and he punched and smashed a door window pane at her home in New Mills.

The offence happened on the same day England’s football team beat Panama 6-1 in their group qualifier on June 24.

Prosecuting solicitor Becky Allsop said Hatton had been drinking seven cans of Budweiser and half-a-bottle of vodka and was watching football when he got it into his head that his partner had been sleeping with a neighbour.

Mrs Allsop added that Hatton had heard a neighbour call her name and the defendant started to insult her before smashing a glass pane of a door at her home.

Hatton, who is of previous good character, pleaded guilty to causing damage to the door at the property.

He told police they had a lot of domestic arguments and he had not intended to damage the door when he struck it.

Mrs Allsop also said there had been four police call-outs during the relationship.

Hatton added to police that he had believed his partner had been having an affair but accepted the neighbour was not involved.

Defence solicitor Robert Sowter said Hatton also accepts that he had reacted inappropriately.

Mr Sowter added that the relationship is completely over now and they had only been together for a year.

Magistrates fined Hatton £184 and ordered him to pay £250 compensation, a £30 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

Hatton was also made subject to a two-year restraining order.
