Join smoke alarms pledge

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and happy New Year.

January is traditionally a time for New Year’s resolutions, but sadly many resolutions are broken before the first week of February.

I’m going to get fit; I’m going to lose weight... All started with good intentions, but soon forgotten.

Well this year, why not make a resolution that will help keep you and your family safe, and one that DFRS will encourage you to keep with weekly reminders.

Pledge to ‘fit working smoke alarms on every level of your home’ and promise to ‘test them weekly’.

Then sit back feeling safe in the knowledge that should the worse happen and fire did break out, you would have the early warning needed to get you and your family out and to safety.Follow us on Twitter (@DerbyshireFRS) and like us on Facebook (Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service) and we will post regular reminders to test your smoke alarms.

Why should you have smoke alarms fitted into your home? You’re twice as likely to die in a fire if you don’t have a smoke alarm that works.

Ninety people die each year because the battery in their smoke alarm was flat or missing.

Fit smoke alarms on every level of your home. Smoke alarms are cheap and easy to install. They are available form DIY stores, electrical stores and most high street supermarkets. There are a variety of different models to choose from. Your local Fire and Rescue Service will be happy to give you advice on which one is best suited for you.

Look out for symbols which show the alarm is approved and safe.

Of course, as well as having smoke alarms fitted on every level of your home, you should also have a planned and practiced escape route.

If fire did break out in the middle of the night, everyone in your family should know how to get out, stay out and call 999.
