Arsonists have destroyed a commemorative bench installed in honour of the Queen’s 2012 Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Firefighters were called to Stoney Clouds in Sandiacre at around 9pm on Monday September 8, but the blaze had already taken hold and the bench was completely destroyed. It is expected to cost Erewash Borough Council around £1,200 to replace.

The bench was one of 60 specially-made seats that were installed as part of a council project to provide long-lasting tributes for the Queen’s landmark anniversary.

Councillor Mike Wallis, the council’s lead member for culture and leisure, sais:“It is difficult to find the words to properly express the anger and frustration we all feel at this disgusting vandalism.

“ The people who set fire to this bench can only be described as mindless yobs.”
