Labour wins by-election

LABOUR’S Cheryl Pidgeon has been elected to the county council after a by-election.

Cllr Pidgeon, beat leader of Erewash Borough Council Cllr Chris Corbett by just 154 votes to win the Sawley seat at the election last Thursday night.

The Trades Union Congress secretary currently represents the Nottingham Road ward on the borough council.

Conservative Cllr Corbett received 1,197 votes while Cllr Pidgeon received 1,351 votes.

Liberal Democrat candidate Fiona Aanonson came last with 692 votes.

The by-election was arranged following the death of Independent councillor Bill Camm earlier this year.

There are now 23 Labour councillors on Derbyshire County Council, 33 Tories and eight Liberal Democrats.
