STAFF at an Ilkeston leisure centre have been left baffled after being forced to cancel nearly every event in a series of activities lined up for children this summer because of a lack of numbers.
The Rutland Sports Park’s series of events held every weekday since the summer holidays began has ranged from curling and lacrosse to face-painting and cheerleading but not enough kids have turned up to make running the activities worthwhile.
Joy Power, duty manager at the West End Drive leisure centre, said that last year they had to cancel just one or two events, having attracted high numbers.
“The activities are great fun, the kids have a fantastic time,” she said.
“The staff are all CRB verified and are qualified coaches.
“It’s a shame we have had such low numbers this year as we have fantastic facilities and we want people to use them.”
On Monday morning there should be an archery session but so far only 10 children have booked a place – last year Joy said all 25 places were booked out.
And a three-day cricket camp from Tuesday looks set to be cancelled if more children fail to put their names down.
Brochures with full listing of activities are available from the Erewash Borough Council website, from Ilkeston Town Hall, or any leisure facility in the borough. Call 0115 9302033 to book your place.
