I have just found out that the Erewash borough coat of arms does not have anything on it to represent the pits in Ilkeston and the surrounding areas.
Didn’t the people who designed the coat of arms realise that Ilkeston was a mining town before anything else? Stanton lace and hosiery are apparently represented but not the mines. I think that this is an insult to ex-miners, those who were killed in the pits and their families.
If this was a mistake by the designers could they possibly rectify it by adding something to represent the mines.
