Letter: TV show on food banks

I am writing about the recent Panorama TV programme concerning food banks and food poverty, which was broadcast a few weeks ago. The programme featured a visit by the former Conservative minister Edwina Currie to the Arena Church food bank, Belfield Street, Ilkeston. The comments made by Edwina Currie to the church pastor, Kristian Thorpe on the subject of food poverty seem similar to the those of the American eugenisist and birth control pioneer, Margaret Sanger.

In Sanger’s 1922 book, ‘The Pivot of Civilisation’, there is a chapter called “The Cruelty of Charity” in which Sanger called for the cessation of charity, saying quote: “Organised charity itself is the sympton of a malignant disease.”
