LEader of the Erewash Liberal Democrats, Rodney Allen, expressed his disappointment after the party lost both of its Erewash seats.
He told the Advertiser: “I hung around to see the figures then left.
“This was at about six in the morning and like a shotgun it hit me.
“I’m disappointed, there’s not much else I can say apart from that.”
Mr Allen stood in Sawley, a ward the had been represented by Bill Camm who decided not to stand this year because of ill health.
Mr Camm, an independent, died earlier this month and tributes were paid by all parties.
Mr Allen added: “Because Bill Camm wasn’t standing it was a strange situation because no one knew which way the voters would go.
“After voting for Bill for so long and his death being announced so close to the election nobody was sure how the electorate would react.”
