The incident happened on Sunday in Long Eaton and police said the victim, a mother of two children was awoken by her smoke alarm at 3.15am.
A police spokesperson said: “The 34-year-old woman was asleep and woken up by her fire alarm. She went downstairs to see smoke coming form her front door so she went back upstairs to get her two children and took them out the back of the house before ringing the emergency services.
“It looks as if someone pushed something through the letter box that was alight. The door was damaged and we have a 34-year-old man on suspicion of arson, who has been released as inquiries are ongoing.
