As the Advertiser went to press the town’s new McDonald’s served up its first burger and fries — along with 45 new jobs.

The new branch, complete with drive thru, on Rutland Street, will employ 88 people in total, 45 more than at its old home in the Albion Centre.

Franchisee Tim Dobbs told the Advertiser: “We’re delighted to be opening the new drive-thru restaurant in Ilkeston, which has resulted in a net increase of 45 jobs.

“We’re really proud of the way it looks, with the digital menu boards and self-ordering kiosks.

“Hopefully our customers will enjoy the new look and feel, and find it a fun, family-friendly environment.”

Those employed at the restaurant will have access to leading training and development programmes, as well as the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications.

Staff will be offered the chance to achieve a range of qualifications from adult certificates in maths and English through to a foundation degree in managing business operations.

Bath Street traders expressed concern when plans to close the Albion Centre restaurant were announced earlier this month.

The town centre outlet closed its doors after 27 years in the town on May 10.

Staff from the branch have kept their jobs and transferred to the new restaurant.

An adjoining unit is yet to be filled.
