Curtis Pass, 21, of Hanbury Close, Holmehall, Chesterfield, had caused the door’s wall screws and a metal restraint to become bent.

Prosecuting solicitor Becky told a Chesterfield magistrates’ court hearing on July 18: “He contacted police himself on June 16 to report he had ripped the door off its hinges at the property where he was living. It was an internal, security, communal door.

“Contractors stated to police that screws holding the door to the wall and a metal restraint had been bent and the cost would be £1,700 to repair.”

Pass told police when he pushed the door he had not intended to damage it but he had pushed it too hard and at the time he had wanted to kill himself because he suffers with depression and mood swings.

The defendant pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage to the door belonging to Derbyshire County Council.

He also admitted committing the offence while he was subject to a 12 month conditional discharge which had been imposed for damaging his partner’s vehicle during a row.

Magistrates sentenced Pass to a 12 month community order with a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement.

Pass was also fined £10 and ordered to pay £150 compensation.
