Students in Mapperley have been going one step beyond in learning the energetic art of Nordic walking.
Mapperley C of E Primary School near Ilkeston is the first in England to teach the increasingly popular sport.
Twelve youngsters completed an intensive six-week course led by Nottingham-based Catherine Hughes, a national coach at British Nordic Walking CIC.
Headteacher Richard Cripps said the activity is ideal for the school, which has just 57 pupils and is nestled in an idyllic spot close to Shipley Country Park.
He said: “Nordic walking is something that a lot of older people have got quite into, but I thought it sounded ideal for our children too.
“Everyone has loved it and we are now going to run an after-school club so that they can continue their training.”
Charlie White, eight, agreed the course was very exciting.
He said: “It was fun to do a lesson that was outside and not stuck in the classroom.”
