A pub landlord and one of his regulars will drive 300 miles to Monte Carlo in an old banger to raise money for charity.
Dave Owens, licensee at The Stanhope Arms in Stanton-By-Dale and John Robinson will take part in the Monte Carlo or Bust Rally challenge to raise money for the Umbrella charity.
The rally is in its fourth year with the aim being to make it across Europe in only three days, completing Top Gear style challenges along the way and arriving in Monte Carlo, France, in perfect working order.
David and regular customer and friend John are currently preparing for the rally on July 16 which will see 90 cars take part'.
Adhering to the rules they have so far purchased a blue Saab 93 ‘banger’ for less than £300 off ebay and are now thinking up an eye catching design for it.
Dave said: “It’s every boys dream to a rally. I looked into it and there were only four places left so I thought I’d just go for it.
“Then I found a local cahrity that would benefit children in Derbyshire.”
They hope to raise between £2,000 and £3,000 and have already sold advertising space on the bonnet.
The car is currently in for repairs at a garage.
Dave added: “We will be tweeting all the way along. We will also be inviting people to give us challenges along the way, so long as it’s nothing illegal
“We aim to have fun but raise money for charity at the same time. “
Dave said he is most looking forward to the excitiment and adventure of the challenge which will see them wear a different fancy dress each day.
The challenge is on to see if they can successfully manage to take a £300 car from Derbyshire to Monte Carlo and win the Monte Carlo or Bust Rally.
