A Stanton-by-Dale councillor has received her chains as the new Mayor of Erewash after an election at a council meeting last Thursday.
Conservative Cllr Val Clare, whose husband Jeffrey was tragically reported missing-at-sea in April last year, will represent the borough for the Civic Year 2013 to 2014.
Cllr Clare, who has represented the Draycott and Stanton-by-Dale ward for the last six years, will be supported by her daughter Hayley Bradly and other family members.
“I am honoured to have been elected as the Mayor of Erewash and will represent the council and serve the people of this wonderful borough with great pride over the coming year,” she said.
“I am well aware of the inspiring and valuable work that goes on daily in all corners of Erewash and I look forward to meeting the many, many people who volunteer and work selflessly to help others.
“There is much of which we can be proud in Erewash and I am truly excited by the coming year when I can help promote our borough.
“I am particularly looking forward to attending the many civic events and to meeting residents of all ages, hearing their stories and saluting their support for Erewash.”
The retired radiographer and mother-of-three has chosen Treetops Hospice in Risley as her civic charity of the year and she will also help to raise money for a charity pot for groups across the borough.
She will be accompanied at many events by the Mayor’s Cadets from the Derbyshire Air Cadet Force, the Air Training Squadron and the Long Eaton Sea Cadets.
The new deputy Mayor of Erewash is Cllr Kewal Athwal, who represents the Wilsthorpe ward in Long Eaton.
The Mayor’s chaplain will be Rev Gary Dundas, of the Risley and Stanton-by-Dale parish.
