ABOUT 8,000 homes in West Hallam, Stanley Common and Cotmanhay were left without water for as long as 11 hours on Sunday.
Severn Trent Water engineers worked through the day to restore water after a pipe under a field off Common Lane in Stanley Common burst at about 8.45am.
The water supply started to be reinstated to homes from about 5pm with some residents not getting their supply back until 8pm.
Customers were advised to run their taps for five to ten minutes to flush out the system.
A spokesman apologised for the problem, explaining that it was made more difficult for engineers because there was such a high demand for water with it being a Sunday.
