Derbyshire County Council Leader Andrew Lewer has welcomed news that the 2012 Olympic Torch Relay is coming to Derbyshire and is urging people to nominate local torchbearers.
Councillor Lewer said: “This is really exciting news. The spotlight will be firmly on Derbyshire in the build up to the Olympics next summer.
“In a little over a year’s time, the iconic Olympic flame could be passing down your street with the whole world watching.
“I would urge local people to put forward any friends, family, neighbours or community volunteers who they believe deserve the honour of carrying the Olympic flame through our county.”
Derby was confirmed this week as one of the locations where the torch relay will stop for an evening celebration event on Friday June 29 2012.
