A BUSY Ilkeston road was shut for three hours during rush hour after a pensioner was seriously hurt in a collision.

Firefighters from Ilkeston fire station had to cut the 86-year-old free from his Vauxhall Corsa at about 5.10pm last Thursday in Heanor Road.

Police closed the road close to the Mallard pub while the fire service used specialist cutting equipment to reach the injured man,

He was rushed by ambulance to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham where he was treated in intensive care for multiple injuries.

But police have said his condition is not thought to have been life-threatening.

One lane of the road was reopened at 6.30pm but the road was not fully reopened until 8.30pm.
