Wildlife officers are appealing for help to trace a man who may have information on the death of a swan next to the Erewash Canal in Sandiacre.

The carcass was found at about 2pm on Tuesday, March 17, on a stretch of towpath behind Canalside Industrial Estate, off Ilkeston Road.

The swan was located near its nest and appeared to have been partially plucked. It is not yet known how it died.

A man who was walking his dog was seen near the carcass just before it was reported to police and officers are keen to speak to him.

He was white, between 50 and 60, clean shaven, and was wearing a light coloured jacket. His dog was described as a sandy Border Terrier type.

Police want to speak to the man to see what information he may have on the discovery of the dead swan.

It is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to kill or harm swans or their nests.

Anyone with information on this incident should call PC 3032 Simon O’Connor on 101, quoting crime reference 11142/15.
