Police are encouraging Derbyshire residents to keep new gifts which have been received for Christmas safe and secure.

Inspector Jim Thompson, who manages Community Safety for D Division, which covers Ilkeston and Long Eaton, said: “An influx of presents has been exchanged over the holiday period and officers would like to ensure that people keep hold of them.

“Most households will now have new items, whether it is bikes, toys, electronic devices and these things are just as attractive to a thief as before Christmas.

“We advise residents to keep any containers or boxes in which items came in to be kept well out of view until the refuse collection day, by piling them up outside your home you only advertise what you have inside.

“As always we encourage people to make sure they keep their sheds and homes secure and please contact your local team of officers for advice

or assistance with crime prevention and security.”
