More than 80 youngsters from Erewash have signed up for an innovative scheme that will see them promote healthy living and sport among their friends.

The students are from schools across the borough and have become young ambassadors for Erewash School Sport Partnership.

Ambassadors are encouraged to increase participation and promote healthy active lifestyles to other young people and raise awareness of the Olympics, which will be taking place in Brazil next year.

The youngsters will lead assemblies and come up with ideas to spread the sporting message across the borough.

Rhian Lilley, Erewash School Sport Partnership development manager, spoke to the young ambassadors at two meetings held this week.

She spoke about the Olympic values which are inspiration, courage, respect, friendship, equality, excellence and determination and how they could promote them in school.

Lucy Haywood, PE co-ordinator at Dallimore Primary School in Ilkeston, said: “We really enjoyed meeting the children from other schools. We are looking forward to running activities for children in our school and being able to promote the Olympics.”

Julie Pyefinch is PE co-ordinator at Grange Primary School in Long Eaton.

She said: “The young ambassadors scheme is great because it gives our pupils some really good ideas to take back into school and share with their classmates.

“They get lots of opportunities to attend fantastic events which really inspire them and they often come away from them bubbling with suggestions.”

Jack Gorman, 10, from Shardlow Primary School, said he was enjoying his new role.

He said: “I was chosen by my teacher to be a young ambassador and I was really happy about that.

“We want to do an assembly about the Olympics but it’s good to come to these meetings as we get lots of ideas from them.”

Primary schools involved include Longmoor, Grange, Shardlow, Firfield, St Laurence, Parklands Infant, Ashbrook Infant and Junior, Charlotte Infant, Chaucer Infant and Junior, Field House, Hallam Fields, Kensington, Dallimore, Ladywood, Mapperley, Scargill, Stanley St Andrews, St Thomas, Cotmanhay Infant and Junior, Granby, Stanley Common, Sawley Junior, Brooklands and Cloudside.

Erewash School Sport Partnership’s core priority is to improve the quality and quantity of PE and sport in school by engaging and motivating young people.
