REVIEW: Laughter, music and frocks - the Priscilla bus arrives in Sheffield

A glittering evening of dance, comedy and music awaits theatre-goers who enter the world of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

The sheer visual spectacle of the stage show would be enough for me to recommend it to others - but beyond the outrageous costumes, bright lights and disco balls, lies a heartwarming tale of three people trying to find themselves in the stark Australian outback.

Jason Donovan looks enviable in a glitzy frock as the lead character Tick - a drag queen from Sydney who travels by bus across the desert to the backwater town of Alice Springs to meet his son for the first time.

Simon Green plays the part of aging performer Bernadette with a ladylike grace that I hope to have when I am older.

Meanwhile Adam Bailey’s energetic portrayal of vivacious youth Adam, with his sassy comebacks and impressive dance moves, is a thing to behold.

I often find musicals tedious, however this one was enjoyable for me as it was a mixture of disco and pop classics. Along with the majority of the audience I found myself tapping my feet and clapping to the music. I think if there had been a dance floor in the room I would have been up on it!

Spectacular, engaging, hilarious and - at times - touching, Priscilla Queen of the Desert is a fantastic show which has been expertly translated from film to stage.
