Plans to redevelop the former Stanton Ironworks could be more palatable for campaigners after plans to build a road alongside the M1 have been revealed.
Planning Minister Nick Boles visited the site on Thursday with Erewash MP Jessica Lee.
He said: “Everybody says Stanton needs to be developed but there are huge issues clearly with transport for local residents.”
He said Erewash Borough Council and the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership could apply to a Local Infrastructure Fund to build a road alongside the M1, which could appease campaigners who are against building access roads through greenbelt.
Miss Lee added: “We’ve got one chance to get Stanton right. People aren’t against an access road, it’s whether it’s running around the site or alongside the motorway.
“I am going to try to do some research as to whether it would be feasible to make an application to the infrastructure fund in this case.”
The council received a planning application in February from site owners Saint-Gobain for 1,950 homes, employment space and more.
