A LEADING theatre critic put Onassis, a play starring Ilkeston-born actor Robert Lindsay in his worst plays of 2010 list.

Charles Spencer of the Daily Telegraph branded the play ‘codswallop’ and compared it to ‘reading yellowing cuttings from long forgotten gossip columns.’

The play, written by Martin Sherman, was staged at Derby Theatre before a run at the Novello Theatre in London’s West End.

It told the story of Greek oil tycoon Aristotle Onassis and his relationships with Maria Callas and wife Jackie Kennedy.

Mr Spencer put it at number four in his list of five and said: “Even Robert Lindsay couldn’t save this codswallop, though his name somehow kept it running.”
