A school that was put into special measures in 2012 has now been rated as outstanding by Ofsted.
Bennerley Fields Specialist Speech and Language College, in Stratford Street, Cotmnahay, was inspected in January when the school was rated outstanding in all areas, including quality of teaching, and behaviour and safety of pupils.
The 12-page report has high praise for headteacher Debbie Gerring, stating: “The headteacher is an exceptional leader and, together with the senior staff and governors, has effectively tackled the issues identified in the last inspection.
“Pupils’ behaviour is outstanding. They have excellent attitudes to learning and love coming to school. The school’s efforts to ensure that pupils are safe are outstanding.”
The inspectors also praised the school’s atmosphere and governing body.
Ms Gerring said: “Bennerley Fields Specialist Speech and Language College was put into special measures in February 2012. Following a recent Ofsted Inspection the school was decreed ‘Outstanding’ across all areas by the inspectors.
“Getting the school to this position has been an amazing team effort.
“All staff and Governors have worked relentlessly to improve outcomes for pupils. Our pupils are amazing and have a great voice in the school. The support we have had from our wonderful families has been superb. Together we have made an outstanding school in which all of our children and young people learn and thrive.”
One of the pupils told the inspectors during the visit from Ofsted that she liked the school better than her old one because: ‘Staff listen to me, help me and understand me – I really feel as if I am valued and that I belong.’
