Students, staff, parents and members of the local community took part in Ormiston Ilkeston Enterprise Academy’s festive Big Read.
About 1,000 people at the academy dropped everything at 1.55pm on December 12 to pick up a book and read for 30 minutes.
The academy promoted the event to parents and the local community by urging people to take a book to work to read during their break or on public transport.
The focus of the Big Read was festive and coincided with students at the academy wearing Christmas jumpers to raise money for Save The Children.
It is the second Big Read event to have taken place at the school.
Joel Smith, Assistant Principal for Achievement, said: “We are striving to boost literacy for our young people and also promote reading for pleasure across the community.
“It brings everyone together and encourages a love of reading, which is so important.”
