Stapleford residents are to pay tribute to a First World War hero and recipient of the highest military decoration awarded for valour.
A special service will take place at 12pm on Sunday April 26, at St Helen’s Church in Stapleford, to commemorate the life of Walter Richard Parker, who received the Victoria Cross.
The lance-corporal was awarded the honour for his brave actions during the Battle of Gallipoli.
Following the church service, a memorial bench will be dedicated to the people of Stapleford in the Walter Parker VC Square on Derby Road at 1.30pm.
The bench has been provided on behalf of the Stapleford Combined Services Club and Stapleford Community Group, and members of both organisations are inviting local people to attend on the day.
