A shopkeepr has told of the terrifying moment a
customer pulled a seven inch knife on him demanding he hand over cash.

But instead of panicking, Manmohan Heer grabbed a hockey stick and fought off the would-be robber from the Lifestyle Express shop on Nottingham Road.

He told the Advertiser: “He had his hood up and a scarf over his face and then he pulled out this massive bread knife and said something like ‘give me the cash’. I laughed to start with because I thought he was joking.

“He swung the knife at me but missed so I grabbed the hockey stick and swung it at him. He managed to duck and then ran to try and get to the till through the counter so I swung the stick a few more times.”

Meanwhile, Mr Heer’s wife, Baljinder, who was upstairs in the couple’s flat, saw the drama unfolding via a CCTV link to the shop’s cameras.

She explained: “I noticed something out of the corner of my eye on the screen and then I saw Manmohan struggling.

“I looked again and saw the man had a knife and my husband had got a hockey stick. I ran downstairs without thinking and then he ran off.”

The pair, who have run the off licence for nine years, said they both instantly recognised the masked man as a regular customer which added to the shock.

Manmohan said: “I was shocked and shaken.

“I was just so surprised it was him. He had only been in the shop a few hours earlier to buy something.

“Nothing like this has ever happened to us before.”

Baljinder added: “It was really quiet at the time and came out of nowhere.”

The couple instantly called police after the incident on Monday night at about 9pm.

A 20-year-old man was arrested after the pair spoke to police.

CCTV has been handed to investigating officers.
