A sick pervert has been jailed for 16 years for sexually abusing four young girls over a 30 year period.
Peter Staley, 70, from Sycamore Crescent, Sandiacre was charged with 17 counts of abuse. He pleaded guilty to 16 of the 17 charges at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday, some of which dated back to the early 1980s.
His victims, whose identity is protected by law, were aged between ten and 14 when the offences took place.
The abuse came to light when one of the victims confided in a teacher at school. This led to other victims coming forward.
When interviewed by police Staley said that one of his victims - aged just 11 - had instigated it and denied that he was a child abuser. He had said: “I had just got away with it for so long.”
He told one of his victims that people would be disappointed in her if she told anyone.
She said Staley had ‘taken her childhood’.
In sentencing, Judge Michael Stokes, said: “In the years I have been a judge I have had to deal with some pretty disgusting men and you are in a category of your own. Throughout this period of abuse you were an adult and they were children. You have repeatedly groomed and abused four young girls.
“The damage you have caused in uncountable. Some of these offences go back to the mid-80s..... you got away with it for an extensive period of time.
“Where you not an old man of 70 the court would have undoubtedly have imposed an extended sentence because of your course of conduct over many years. This indicates that you pose a significant risk of causing harm to young girls.”
He told Staley his age was no mitigation for what he had done and he may die in jail.
“It is heartbreaking to read the statements made by those who have made victim statements as to the effect your behaviour has had on their lives. They will never forget what you did to them.”
Staley will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the rest of his life.
