Thousands of people packed out Ilkeston’s Market Place on Friday night for the Christmas lights switch-on.
Mayor of Erewash Cllr Val Clare was joined by her granddaughter, Grace Walton, as she flicked the switch that saw the town’s lights come to life as crowds cheered.
Festive fun was order of the night with a Victorian-style market, street entertainers, Erewash Museum activities as well as fairground rides.
Carol singers and walkabout entertainers all helped to create a magical atmosphere.
Residents and children were also able to follow ‘reindeer footprints’ from the Market Place to the museum where they could meet Ebenezer Scrooge as well as some of Santa’s reindeers in the grounds.
Cllr Mike Wallis, lead member for culture and leisure, said: “The countdown to Christmas 2013 is officially under way.
“Friday was yet another wonderful celebration to light up the town.
“It is always a lovely, family event and brings everyone together to welcome the festive season and is a great opportunity for us to celebrate all that our town has to offer.”
Also on hand was the Tiser’s promotions team who offered goody bags including a copy of the paper.
