Stapleford Carnival parade is called off

Organisers of Stapleford Carnival have taken the decision to cancel the parade part of the event due to a lack of support.

The announcement was made this week by carnival organiser Katharine Stewart.

There had previously been an appeal for volunteers to help with the route after Nottinghamshire Police said they could no longer marshal the event because of financial constraints.

Katharine said: “The time and effort trying to keep the parade ‘on the road’ so to speak has unfortunately come to an end.

“The reason being not only the problem over the police being unable to marshal the event due to cutbacks in their budgets, and having to have a traffic management plan, but also the logistics of those problems was just too much for the organisers and Notts – Derbys Hemlockstone Lions Club.”

Traffic management company H W Martin had offered to do the traffic management plan for free but it was ultimately felt that it would be too much responsibility for volunteers to take on.

The carnival itself however will still take place. It will be held at Ilkeston Road Recreation Ground on Saturday September 7 from 11.30pm.

Organisers have also promised a surprise for people who turn up at 11am.
