An Ilkeston great-great grandmother has turned 100.
Nellie Wittering, who loves singing and is known for her stylish clothes, puts her long life down to her good diet, with plenty of vinegar and very littler sugar, the love of her family and her Christian faith.
Nellie was born in Milton Street, Cotmanhay on October 21 1915. When she was 14 the managing director of Sudbury’s on Market Street offered her a job modelling the dresses for the shops in London but she said no.
She married Joe Wittering, a miner, when she was 23. Joe was tragically killed she he was 50. Nellie is pictured with two of her children Sandra Toplis and John Wittering.
