Sunshine hopes for carnival

Carnival organisers have their fingers crossed that the hot weather will continue to the weekend for this year’s event.

Rebecca May Edwards, 15, will lead th parade as Carnival Queen on Saturday June 8 all the way from Rutland Street, along Bath Street to the Rutland Recreation Ground.

The annual carnival, organised by Ilkeston Lions will kick off at 12noon with the procession starting at 12.30pm in Rutland Street.

The event will lead to road closures between 12.30pm and 1.30pm on streets including Queen Street, Queen’s Drive, Belfield Street and Rutland Street.

Last year’s carnival was cancelled due to wet weather for the first time in the15 years that the Lions have been running it, but early weather reports predict that there will be wall-to-wall glorious sunshine on Saturday.

Money raised this year goes to The Laura Centre’, in Leicesterm which deals with child bereavement.
