A diesel spillage on an Ilkeston road leaked into the Erewash Canal causing two swans in need of rescue by the RSPCA.
The diesel spillage was reported at around 10.30am on Monday, April 20 at Little Hallam Lane and involved 150 litres of diesel.
Fire crews from Ilkeston were called to the scene to contain the spillage, using drain covers and booms.
A spokesman for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The environment Agency were informed because the diesel went into the canal.
“Two swans had diesel on them so the RSPCA were informed.”
