A brave teenager has shaved her head for a children’s cancer charity.

Macie Wombwell, who turned 14 this week, went ahead with the extreme hair cut in front of her classmates in morning assembly at Kirk Hallam Community Technology and Sports College.

Macie was initially raising money to help pay for a Japanese school exchange that she has been chosen to go on.

Her mum Debbie said: “Macie said at the same time she would like raise some for charity.

“We said ‘why not?’ The charity has obviously now taken over and she is supporting Children With Cancer UK.

“On Monday we plaited Macie’s hair into two ponytails as these are being donated to the Little Princess Trust which uses hair to make wigs for children with cancer. We then shaved her hair off with clippers on a ‘0’ setting.

“Mr Ebbage, the new principal of the school and Mr Eagles, who is Macie’s head of year, have been amazingly supportive and helped put the assembly together and let us take it over. Macie had her hair shaved off in front of her year group, with many teachers also attending the assembly to offer support.”

So far the youngster has raised £248 on her Just Giving page and still has £360 to collect in sponsorship money that has already been pledged, with promises of donations still being made.Debbie said: “Macie was inspired by stories of people who have suffered with cancer such as Stephen Sutton.

“She also walked up Mount Snowdon on Sunday.”
