West Hallam author Michael Smith has written a book which contains a number of snippets about Ilkeston and the wider area.

The Derbyshire Miscellany, published by DB Publishing, tells of the town featuring in several episodes of 1970s TV series Boon, starring Michael Elphic.

The book also contains information about the Abbey at Dale, the Erewash and Nutbrook canals and local nature reserves.

Ilkeston’s Art Deco Scala cinema is featured in a section on notable buildings, and there are references to the Stanton Ironworks, the Cat and Fiddle Windmill and the Bottle Kiln at West Hallam, in relation to the area’s contribution to the Industrial Revolution.

A chapter on Derbyshire personalities includes brief biographies of a number of well known Derbyshire characters, including Florence Nightingale, Thomas Cook, Richard Arkwright and Samuel Plimsol.

Michael Smith lives at West Hallam and taught at a number of local schools before retiring in 2005. The paperback book is available from local book shops.
