Pub extension go-ahead

A WEST Hallam pub has been given permission to build an extension despite objections from villagers.

Peter Briggs told Erewash’s planning committee on Wednesday that the extension at the back of the Newdigate Arms would bring more customers and increase drink-fuelled anti-social behaviour.

But Aida McManus from Punch Taverns explained that the extension would be used as a dining room as the pub wants to move from relying on sales of drinks to food to support itself.

Cllr Daniel Walton said: “As someone who works in the industry, I can understand the move to dry-led from wet-led, which is vulnerable at the best of times.

“People going out to dine are not going out to get drunk. If anything it will decrease anti-social behaviour.”

A previous application was turned down in February.
