Tributes have been paid on social media to an 86-year-old man who died after an altercation in Ilkeston.
Police and paramedics were called to a property on Station Road yesterday (Sunday) morning after reports of a dispute between two men inside.
Following the altercation, an 86-year-old man collapsed and was helped by passers-by. He was taken to hospital but sadly died in the early hours of this morning.
People, including members of his family, have since taken to social media to pay tributes to the pensioner, named online as Derek.
Commenting on the Derbyshire Constabulary Facebook page, Simmone Whittaker said: "R.i.p Derek, can't believe someone would do this to such a nice and pleasant man."
And Alexandra Billson commented: "RIP Derek one of our regular swimmer's who will be sadly missed..From all staff at Victoria Park Leisure Centre."
And on the Spotted Ilkeston Town Facebook page, Elizabeth Emma Marriott said: "So sorry for your loss, he was a lovely man."
Maureen Brown added: "I live on Station Rd, I passed him most days. He was always cheerful and loved a chat bless him."
Jo Mozley said: "RIP Uncle Derek, one true gentleman."
And Kat Rowley added: "Absolute gentleman, one of the nicest blokes you'll meet. RIP Derek thoughts are with the family."
Derbyshire police said the death was being treated as unexplained at this time and an investigation has been launched.
A spokesman added: "We believe several people will have walked past the house after the incident and while the man was being treated by passers-by.
"We want to hear from these people and from anyone in the area who has CCTV."
