Ilkeston folk were united in a celebration of festive fun as the town’s Christmas lights were switched on on Friday.
The event featured street entertainers, carol-singing, musical performances, a fun fair and an appearance by Santa Claus and even some real reindeer.
Kicking the event off was Ilkeston Brass Band with a performance of seasonal favourites to the backdrop of Victorian-inspired nativity scenes inside illuminated displays performed by local youngsters.
Four-piece band Acoustic Union warmed up the crowd before Erewash mayor Jennifer Hulls came on stage for the switch on.
The whole event took place alongside a Victorian Christmas Craft Market organised by Ilkeston Rotary Club.
Erewash Borough councillor Mike Wallis said: “The countdown to Christmas 2012 is under way and our switch-on event in Ilkeston is a wonderful night for all the family, full of festive fun and seasonal spirit.
“This annual event is incredibly popular and provides an opportunity for people of all ages to join together, have fun, enjoy the atmosphere and welcome the start of the Christmas season in our town centre and celebrate all that it has to offer.”
