Fracking has hit the headlines again today after David Cameron said councils who support the controversial shale gas extraction will be financially rewarded.

The prime minister said that English local authorities would receive all the business rates collected from shale gas schemes instead of their usual 50 per cent.

The process involves drilling deep underground and releasing a high-pressure mix of water, sand and chemicals to crack rocks and release gas stored inside.

But campaign group Greenpeace, who are strongly against the process, say that the move is just a way to bribe councils.

Last year the group launched a website allowing people the chance to check using their postcode if their area was a potential fracking site.

The entire area covered by the Advertiser, including West Hallam, Stanton-by-Dale, Trowell, Sandiacre, Stapleford and Long Eaton are all in ‘land government is considering for oil and gas drilling, including fracking,’ according to the website.
