The chances of buying food which doesn't meet hygiene standards are as high as one in three in some areas of the UK - and in the worst performing area in Lancashire, this is even higher as two thirds of food businesses don't meet requirements.

But Erewash can proudly say it is the nation's top performer for hygiene. 97 per cent of restaurants, takeaways and other food providers complied with regulations, despite the district being bottom of the table four years ago.

Birmingham and London Boroughs dominated the bottom spots on the national table, according to data submitted to the FSA and Food Standards Scotland by 386 local authorities.

Alex Neill, Managing Director of Home Services at Which?, said: “People expect their food to be safe, but there is clearly still work to be done.

“As we prepare to leave the EU, the Government and regulators need to ensure that there is a robust, independent system of enforcement in place to give people confidence that the food they’re eating is hygienic.”
