Plans to transform the old Woolworths store on Bath Street into a mini shopping arcade and flats have been approved.
An application was put in by Prestige Estate Agents, on behalf of one of their clients, a charitable trust.
Work will see the old store renovated and made into six retail units and five flats.
Before the application was submitted shoppers, traders and the ‘Tiser had all raised concerns over the state of the building which had stood empty since the popular chain went bust and the shop was shut down in 2009.
In March this year an order was slapped on to the store’s door by Erewash Borough Council demanding that action was taken after it had been left to go to rack and ruin and dead pigeons could be seen rotting through the window.
Mahmood Almnajar, of Prestige Estate Agents, said: “One of the big problerms with the building as it was was its size.
“It was a big space to rent out to a retailer and the rates were sky high.
“Splitting the shop into six units will mean more businesses in Ilkeston and more affordable rates.”
