Council debate was disgrace

I was extremely disappointed in the example that certain councillors set to the youth of the borough, during the full council meeting on Thursday evening.

We cannot encourage young people to speak out and voice their concerns if councillors are setting poor examples of how to behave in the council chamber.

As chairman of the largest political youth movement in the borough, I was drawn to a motion surrounding youth unemployment. I heard Cllr L. Booth state that we have some of the best educational establishment’s in the country within the borough of Erewash and yet we have the highest unemployment rate in Derbyshire.

Having close links with both Wilsthorpe Business and Enterprise College and Friesland Specialist Performing Arts College, I can only agree with Cllr Booth’s statement.

The statement within the motion, presented by Cllr Booth suggested that the council put party ideology to one side and join together to resolve the issue of youth unemployment, a sentiment that would, I’m sure, be applauded, especially by the youth of the borough.

However, by shifting the blame of youth unemployment on to the coalition Government, the Labour group are doing the exact opposite. If councillors are really that bothered about the youth of today and tomorrow, then should they not be heeding their own advice and put party politics aside?
