ILKESTON FC chairman Dave Mantle admitted he was “thrilled” last week to see the Academy youngsters parading two trophies around the New Manor Ground - but was quick to follow it up with a warning.
The chairman is determined that clinching the league and cup double in the Central Conference will be just the start of what Ilkeston FC achieve in years to come but he stressed: “Kevin Wilson and I cannot do it on our own”.
The pair have already taken steps since SR Education moved in during November to surround themselves with people who understand what it takes to run a successful football club.
But Mantle added: “So much of what we achieve is down to the people of Ilkeston.
“I know there is still some baggage attached to the club from what has happened over the past few years but it’s crucial that people put that aside and give us a chance.
“Season-tickets will be going on sale very shortly, and we’re extremely keen to talk business with any firms and companies within the town who feel they are able to work with us on a commercial basis.
“The next couple of months will be absolutely crucial in setting the standards that Ilkeston FC will live by in the years to come, and we need to make best use of every available day.”
Mantle is full of praise for the work done by Wilson and his assistant Darren Caskey this season and has every confidence in them to build a first-team team that can bring more success.
He added: “Kevin believes that building from the bottom is the way forward and I’m pleased about that because I see it the same way.
“He wants to put the accent on young players that can be coached to get better and there’s a real future in that.
“We’re really excited about what is happening at the New Manor Ground and I just hope that supporters and potential sponsors - especially those who are still sitting on the fence - feel the same way.”
