Coaches urged to apply for bursary

Sports coaches who tutor 16+ age groups are being encouraged to apply for a bursary from the Derbyshire Sport Coach Bursary Fund in the second of the fund’s themed rounds.

The Derbyshire Sport Coach Bursary Fund offers grants to coaches to help them gain qualifications and knowledge in the sports they coach, and eligible coaches can now apply for up to 65 per cent of the cost of their course – up to a maximum of £300 – through the ‘Plus 16’ themed round.

The ‘Plus 16’ themed round follows the women and girls themed round, which closed on New Year’s Eve.

Two further themed rounds are also planned:

Disability – For coaches who have a disability or who coach participants with a disability. Applications open from April 1, 2012 – June 30, 2012.

Black and Minority Ethnic Groups (BME) – For coaches from black and ethnic minority backgrounds and those who coach participants from black and minority ethnic groups. Applications open from July 1, 2012 – September 30, 2012.

The Derbyshire Sport Coach Bursary Fund is well-established across the county and currently supports more than 200 coaches per year.

Grants of up to 50 per cent of the cost of a course, up to the value of £200, will continue to be available to coaches who do not meet the criteria of the themed rounds.

For coaches undertaking a Level Three course bursaries of up to £350 are available.

Applications for the ‘Plus 16’ themed round can be made from now until March 31, 2012.

Coaches must apply for a bursary before the start of their course, and applications for the themed rounds will be accepted up to 12 months in advance of a course starting.

Cllr Carol Hart, chair of Derbyshire Sport, said: “The Derbyshire Sport Coach Bursary Fund offers support to coaches to help them gain accredited qualifications, and we launched the themed rounds to provide additional help to those coaches from under-represented groups.

“We want to see more people taking part in sport and physical activity regularly, and the Coach Bursary Fund is one way we hope to achieve this.”
