FA Cup 2QR replay

Belper Town 1 Ilkeston FC 5

Ilkeston turned on the style in the pouring rain on Tuesday night as Belper Town were put to the sword at the second attempt.

The Robins produced a stunning display once they’d recovered from falling behind early on, eventually recording their biggest win of the season so far.

Truth be told the match was over by half-time, but that wasn’t how things looked after only 13 minutes.

With frightening similarities to Saturday’s goal that forced a replay in the first place, Ashley Longstaff pulled away from his marker at the back post to score from a Simon Harrison set piece, his left foot shot finding the corner of the net.

It didn’t take Ilkeston long to respond. James Reid’s corner was punched out by keeper Aaron Chapman but the ball rebounded into the net seemingly off a Belper player, believed to be sub Michael Simpkins although Joe Maguire got credit for being the nearest Robins player to the final touch.

That triggered Ilkeston to take control and young striker Aaron Hooton had them in front on 24 minutes when he superbly headed home Matt Richards’ cross.

Richards was a class apart throughout and scored the third himself on the half-hour, side-footing into the top corner from 25 yards out after the ball was cleared to him following a corner.

Belper weren’t completely out of it, Jordan Ball stumbling after pouncing on an error and despite having rounded keeper Ashley Timms his clumsiness saw the ball go wide.

The match was effectively settled in first-half stoppage time, as the excellent Reid fed Daryll Thomas and he turned to fire home despite the efforts of Greg Wright on the line.

The second-half was just as comfortable for Ilkeston despite Belper’s attempts to salvage something.

Colin Marrison was the closest with a shot just too high, but after Richards, twice, and Watts had gone close to a fifth, it arrived on 64 minutes as Thomas did well down the right before cutting back to Dion Chambers whose low placement into the corner completed the scoring.

The rain continued to pour but chances dried out as the Robins eased to the end and set up a home clash with Gresley FC on October 6.
