Mitchell Tait took charge of the U18 side as they returned to action.

The academy were 3-0 winners over Basford United in the SCL Youth League on Wednesday, before the FCB team beat hosts Sandiacre Town 3-1 in a friendly on Saturday.

The academy victory came thanks to goals from Ayleal Dill with a brace and Seke Spence, while Dill was on target again at Sandiacre alongside Ricco Spence and Kieran Cummings.

For Mitchell Tait, who took the coaching reins for the academy fixture, it was good to see the players back in action after such a long break.

He said: “I thought the game went really well considering it was our first match back for four or five months.

"We dominated the game from start to finish – the first 30 minutes or so everyone was a bit rusty but you’d expect that. We created a lot of chances though and the best thing about it is that we’re starting to link training into matches, and our work on movement off the ball was evident in all three goals we scored today.”

Tait is currently a member of the Ilkeston Town first team squad under Martin Carruthers, but has designs on becoming a coach with the academy next season and was delighted to be given the opportunity by U18s boss David Lilley to take charge against Basford.

He said: “It was good of them to see how I’d cope with the first game and I loved every minute of it.

"I think I did everything I could have done, managing the game in certain situations and making subs at the right time and giving everyone plenty of game time.

"First team football is very different to the academy game, given you’re going from step four of the pyramid to development football.

"But having played a few times for the first team it’s been good to bring the knowledge I’ve gained in a short period of time to this team, passing on information and coaching the players through the game.”

With regard to first team action, the start date for the new NPL Division One South/East season has been confirmed as Saturday, August 14.

In the meantime, it is hoped the Robins will be able to compete in some specially-arranged tournaments to help raise club income.
