ILKESTON FC will head to Leek Town this weekend as they aim to get their pre-season friendly schedule started at the second attempt.
Last Saturday’s game with Skegness United was called off on Friday (see page 50), meaning the Robins squad have had to wait an extra week for a return to action.
But while manager Kevin Wilson admitted some frustration with the match being cancelled, he wasn’t unduly concerned from a football perspective.
He said: “It’s all about fitness at the moment so training can help that, but obviously you want to get match practice as soon as you can too so it was a shame from that point of view, as well as the fact it was going to be a Family Day at the New Manor Ground.
“But providing the weather behaves we’ll go to Leek with a similar plan and give minutes to as many players as we can.”
Sheffield United are then due to visit the New Manor Ground next Wednesday night (18th) in the first of the prestige friendlies scheduled.
Wilson added: “Should Leek be called off too I’m not worried that the Sheffield United game could be the first friendly as they’ll be easing into things too.
“It should be a great night as they’re aiming to bring a strong side down, so we’re looking forward to it.”
Meanwhile, season ticket prices have now risen by ten per cent after the end of the ‘Early Bird’ promotion run by the club.
See www.ilkestonfc.co.uk for more details on the new prices.
Sheffield United arrive next Wednesday night (18th) before several other friendly matches take place ahead of the new season.
Notts County visit on Saturday 21st and Burton Albion three days later, before a trip to Gresley follows on July 28.
Port Vale will send a team to the New Manor Ground on Tuesday, July 31, before an away game at last season’s play-off semi-final opponents Sheffield FC follows on August 4.
The schedule is rounded off by a trip to Hucknall Town on Tuesday, August 7 and then a home match with Mickleover Sports on Friday, August 10.
