Ilkeston FC 4 Barwell 2
Ilkeston recovered from a dreadful start to record their second 4-2 win in three days against Barwell on Monday night.
The visitors led 2-0 after just nine minutes but two penalties coupled with a red card for Barwell’s Jamie Hood before half-time brought the teams level and the Robins went on to seal all three points during the second-half.
Barwell started impressively, their incisive movement and passing causing the hosts real problems and meriting two goals in quick succession.
On six minutes, Shaun Byrne’s cross from the right was met by a diving header from skipper Richard Lavery which beat keeper Rob Peet, and moments later Daniel Newton curled in a superb goal from 25 yards out to leave the hosts shell-shocked.
Ilkeston’s Matt Richards and Barwell’s Luke Barlone both missed good chances to add further goals, but the deficit was reduced on the half-hour mark as Scott Lower was, perhaps harshly, judged to have fouled the surging Kane Richards in the penalty area and Aaron Webster netted the spot-kick.
Peet then crucially pulled off a fine stop to deny Byrne from close range, before Parity was restored on 44 minutes courtesy of another penalty.
Hood was deemed to have headbutted Aaron Hooton as a free-kick was about to be taken and after consultation with his assistant, ref Ben Cooke sent Hood for an early bath, awarded the penalty and Webster obliged once more.
Barwell were rattled and never really recovered. Newton nearly restored the lead after the break with a shot wide from a narrow angle, but the Robins completed their comeback on 54 minutes when, after a good passing move, Reid got to the byline and sat the ball up for Hooton to nod home from three yards out.
Reid and Matt Richards went close to adding a fourth, the need for which was highlighted as Barwell sub Callum Earls blazed over from close range in the third minute of stoppage time.
But seconds later the win was sealed as Antwan Russell’s ball into the six-yard box was pushed out by keeper Liam Castle as far as Gary Ricketts who stabbed home to secure the points.
