Rotherham ease past Robins in friendly

Ilkeston FC 0

Rotherham United 4

Ilkeston FC were well beaten by a strong Rotherham United side in their latest pre-season friendly at the New Manor Ground on Wednesday night.

The Millers fielded a team packed with first team players who hadn’t featured the previous night against Bolton Wanderers, and their class shone through against an Ilkeston side that included several trialists.

Ball retention was a problem for Ilkeston throughout but the visitors were making it hard with some concise passing football that cut the Robins open on several occasions.

Nicky Walker and Danny Hylton both went close early on for Rotherham, the latter seeing his shot strike a post via the legs of keeper Scott Low.

The opening goal came on 18 minutes when Michael Tidser set the pacy Kieran Agard free and he ran through to finish well past Low.

All the best chances were falling to Rotherham, Tidser, David Noble, Michael O’Connor and Hylton all nearly adding a second before the break.

Ilkeston’s only effort of note was Jack Watts’ long range effort which found the car park behind the Rotherham goal.

That was a trend that continued in the second-half, although several Robins changes did give them a bit more impetus going forward.

Rotherham were two up on 49 minutes, however, as Walker headed home from Rob Milsom’s fine cross.

Matt Richards saw a shot spilled by keeper Adam Collin and Watts also wasted another good chance for the Robins, before Milsom produced a fine solo effort to make it 3-0 on 63 minutes, beating two players and then rounding Low before sliding the ball home.

Tidser saw two identical efforts curled wide, before the final goal came on 81 minutes as Walker again profited from a Milsom cross by arriving at the back post to slam the ball home from six yards out.

A lack of work ethic from the Robins was manager Kevin Wilson’s main gripe after the game, but there is no question that a full-strength Ilkeston side would have put much more of a fight up against their more illustrious opponents, and that later summer tests will offer much more of an insight than this as to the progress being made.
